Quilting ambitions

I'm taking the plunge and going to (try to) make a quilt for this baby.

First time for everything.

Fabrics have been purchased.

As you can see, we're going fairly monochromatic with a wee bit of warmth.

So all that remains (apart from the small matter of making it, that is!) is to finalise the design.

A bit of pinterest wandering has me drawn to the arrangement of triangles somehow - with the bulk of the quilt in white and a contrasting trim.

Feedback welcome!!

And plenty of other projects in the pipeline... here's a wee sneak peak: coming soon :)

Painting (mis-)adventures

We all love painting in our house.

And the girls were very excited when I told them our plans for the day included making some art for their new bedroom.

Challenge: I've found their art tends to be made at Playgroup on thin paper that doesn't travel/keep well and in bright primary colours that don't necessarily suit our home - but I want them to have something of their own making in their new room.

Solution: I mixed some colours I liked and left them to it.

Kids can do 'abstract' paintings better than any adult trying to be abstract... the wee one stuck at it the longest.

Challenge: Not having 'washable' paints at home.

Solution: Outside seemed the best option to manage the mess of painting with non-washable paints.

(Although we did have one wee incident involving unmixed paint that was left in the kitchen and an unsupervised 2 year old who climbed on a chair to reach the bench... could've resembled a murder scene given the quantity of red paint our bench wore, but was able to be all cleaned up thankfully!)

But both very pleased and proud of their final efforts.

So am I.

Although the 'new room' seems an age away, we can't wait to put it all together.

Seriously, a blog post about blogging?!

Like this serious newbie just became an expert, or something???

But it's all just made sense.

I've just spied the best quote I've ever seen on the subject.

It's answered my questions about how this is going to fit in and why I'm doing it.

I wonder what I'll be motivated to do/make/create/explore/try???

That Holly Becker is one talented lady.

Summer gratitude

Summer months are fabulous for so many reasons...

(summer fruit, heat, summer wardrobes, beaches, Christmas, holidays, quick laundry drying - oh the thrills! etc etc)

.. but above all else, I particularly love the longer daylight hours.

When you're a mum who happens to 'work' from home, much industrious activity goes on after bedtime.

Including taking photos of things you hope to sell.

And I'm just not a fan of artificial light; I much prefer the light that streams in my windows - which at this time of year can be put to good use for a couple of hours post-kids in bed.

Simple pleasures.

Baby blues

I don't mean the postnatal variety.

But the soft, snuggly, soothing type of baby blues.

A colour usually associated with boys - but that's unfairly depriving the girl babies of this beautiful colour, which happens to be fabulous combined with a delicate floral or soft pink...

Who am I to change society's preconceptions?

Weekend d.i.y. - papier mâché

Early last year, I started posting some d.i.y ideas on my Facebook page.

They seemed to be popular.

I wasn't especially regular with this undertaking, but might 'try harder' this year.

Here's my first offering for 2013.

Paper mache - I like it better en francais : papier mâché - and of course with an accent over the 'e', it makes the pronunciation so much more obvious and elegant.

Not that there's anything elegant about the process.

It's mucky and not quick. But fun and packed with potential applications.

I'm using these bowls in my shop for displaying new products.

Handy and surprisingly hardy.

Colours and sizes are only limited by your imagination.

Definitely give this one a go.

For the love of babies

As much as I love babies, I've often found myself buying (!) presents for friends' babies.

Obviously a gap in The Penny Drops' repertoire...

One I've decided to fill.

Above is a cushion I've made for a new baby girl.

And one up my sleeve - to list in the shop, or have ready and waiting for the next baby that comes along.

And I listed this blanket last night, went to a meeting, came home and it was sold.

* Thrilled *

I love this little beauty - and couldn't be happier about where it's going :)

More are in the pipeline!

Coming soon

Throwing a few new ideas into the mix lately.

Like these images.

Still to determine how they'll be presented.

But I love them.

A small sample includes some 'out and about' scenes:

Some 'been waiting to do something with this image for a while' images:

And some new still lifes:

There is a front running candidate for presentation.

Hoping to be with your shortly.

My to-do list is long.

I am crossing things off.

But adding little jobs even faster.

Inspiration has abounded this month.

Lately, there's been a bit of this:

Lovely soft dusky colours applied to, among other things, these lovely wooden beads:

Which will eventually be used to create more necklaces... like those I sold out of pre-Christmas.

Good things take time.

Behind the scenes

'My space' in the house is in the smallest room.

In a shared room.

And I'm always finding something that'll be useful for something "one day".

It's not a mindset that's conducive to sharing. But he copes. Admirably, to be fair.

This year I aspire to order. 'A place for everything. And everything in it's place.'
It's a work in progress. But my wool all lives somewhere now.

And one day (soon), this box will emerge from under the stuff piled on top of it.

Pinterest: I love thee.
It fosters my goals of neatness and order; especially sleek boards like this one.
Can't do any harm to admire and dream. One day... (soon).

For boys

Fair to say, to date, The Penny Drops has been dominated by pretty things for the girls.

Granted the occasional 'boys' product has snuck in the mix.

But boys have been somewhat of a mystery to me.

They don't want pretty things for their hair.

Or necklaces.

Or lacy crowns.

Or bracelets.

Might be headed for a step learning curve on that one.

Bring it on.

Let's get in a wee bit of practice...

A custom cushion for a birthday boy.

How excited is a 2 year old going to be about a cushion? Remains to be seen.

But I like it.

A good start...

For the love of change

Having now lived in one house longer than at any other time of my life,
and having done this 'job' for longer than any other job... change is welcome.

Change is refreshing and invigorating and very definitely happening!

New year.
New baby on the way.
New house pending.

New range of "The Penny Drops' offerings.

So why not a new blog to keep it all company?
